Fighting Food-Insecurity

Food insecurity is particularly devastating to children. Not having enough to eat affects children's physical and neurological development, can trigger behavioral and mental health issues, and detracts from their ability to learn in school. Although free and reduced price school meals can help, an estimated 1 in 4 children is in jeopardy of not having any food for the weekends. Based on this identified need, Caring Community Friends' Food4Kids program specifically addresses childhood hunger and targets food-insecure children in our community. Food4Kids provides a reliable resource for nutritious, kid-friendly food to take home on Fridays after school. Caring Community Friends distributes food among Sapulpa elementary schools, Middle School, Junior High, Bartlett Academy, and Sapulpa High School. The program aims to reduce health problems in children by improving their nutritional status. Food4Kids works towards removing the barrier of hunger that contributes to poor school performance. An added benefit is that it empowers school personnel to take direct action to benefit hungry children. The program increases awareness of positive nutrition and resources available to low-income families in our community.
